Spotted Van Leeuwen Ice Cream Truck Williamsburg Brooklyn New York
I was strolling down Bedford on Sat and spotted the Van Leeuwen Ice Cream Truck at N4th. There was a constant line of about 3-4 people and the two lacey summer dress clad ice cream attendants were doing their very best to keep up with the demand on this hot Spring day. When I got to the front of the line, I tried to convince her to come back since we could definitely use some more fresh made ice cream options here! Hey I know the Kool Man ice cream trucks are in fact cool, but Van Leeuwen – have you tried it?
Think naturally made gourmet ice cream with amazing natural flavors. I particularly liked the ginger flavored ice cream with small chunks of sweet and spicy candied ginger. All products are locally grown and like Ben and Jerry’s they also donate a portion of the profits to a nonprofit sustainability effort. In their situation, Van Leeuwen donates 1% of profits to Wildlife Direct, an organization that actively protects endangered species in the Congo. Furthermore, the staff of the Van Leeuwen Ice Cream truck is not just friendlier than the dudes in the Endless Summer hipster taco truck 2 blocks up, but they’re also more eco-friendly. Van Leeuwen’s cups and napkins are made out of bagasse – a fiber from sugar cane husk.
Want to try it out? Van Leeuvan has 3 trucks in the city and as she was saying they are usually in SOHO, NYU, and another in the East Village. Sometimes Park Slope but today was their first in Williamsburg. Also you can pick up a pint at select Whole Foods stores.
Definitely try a few cones then next time you see the bright yellow truck!
