Joe’s Shanghai Midtown NY – Soup Dumplings / Xiao Long Bao
No Cardboard Stuffed Dumplings here!
24 W 56th Street
So did you hear about the street vendor in Beijing that was caught stuffing baozi with cardboard ? Here’s a link to the Cardboard Stuffed Dumplings on CNN. Apparently the man took cardboard, used a caustic chemical to melt it down into a pulp then added some fatty pork and stuffed them into dumplings and sold them to unwitting customers! This is horrible. I love the street food of Beijing and when I lived out there a few years ago, I would often eat these dumplings several times a week .. Guess I have to think twice now. Who knows what’s next after the cardboard?
Anyhow, here in good old Midtown NY you can enjoy Cardboard-Free dumplings at Joe’s Shanghai. Yes, the same Joe’s Shanghai that you’ll find down on Pell Street that is over run with tourists (here in the midtown location, you don’t have that probelm). I wrote about the xiao long bao / soup dumplings last month when I reviewed Grand Sichuan, I would say the difference between the two restaurants is well, Joe’s soup dumplings are a bit more soupier. Also the crab meat dumplings are a bit richer. Either way, I would recommend either Grand Sichuan or Joe’s Shanghai. Enjoy!
*** Ok, so now I just got updates that the Cardboard Stuffed Dumplings story was a hoax. : http://www.cnn.com/2007/WORLD/asiapcf/07/18/china.health.fake.reut/index.html Is it really a hoax by a reporter trying to capitalize on the Cardboard Stuffed Dumplings story or is it now a Chinese Government cover up? Interesting.
