Hagi Sake Bar – Midtown Times Square NY

Hagi is located in the basement just a few steps away from the 49th St Uptown N/R entrance. Be wary however, Hagi has one of those classic NY difficult to find / mysterious underground “illegal gambling-brothel –massage parlour-speakeasy“ feeling entrances – I love it! On the block you’ll find several Neon Signs in Japanese competing for your attention, but just stay to the right and make a sharp right down the flight of smoky stairs for Hagi. Once inside, you’ll find a very lively bar and grill that is open for your pleasure till as late as 3AM. Like Bon Chon Chicken, Hagi is a bar (extensive Sake selection) with a great menu. You can order Sushi, Noodles and a great assortment of grilled bar meats including beef, chicken skin, and gizzards. The chicken skin skewers were pretty good. We also tried the Hamachi Kama or Yellowtail Collarbone. They don’t include the dipping sauce here but they grill the Hamachi with coarse salt and there is a slight glaze so I suspect it’s been marinated to a degree. The taste is incredible – so simple yet powerful in every way imaginable. If you have an appetite, I’d recommend the seafood yaki soba plate which has a combination of shrimp, squid, and clams over a ramen style pasta. It’s served with an alfredo cream sauce. See you down in the basement!
