City Bakery Salad Bar Cafe Restaurant
3 W 18th St
Union Square New York
Salad Bar extravaganza. Sometimes you just want a simple light, good tasting salad. And if you want to avoid the lines and chaos at the salad bar at Whole Foods Union Square, I would recommend checking out the City Bakery Salad Bar. As you know, Union Square offers an enormous choice of restaurants. There’s some fancy places like Bobby Flay’s Mesa Grill on 5th ave, Union Square Cafe, Gramercy Tavern, Eleven Madison, Tabla, and Blue Smoke as well as specialty places like Zen Palatte Vegetarian or Mandler’s Sausage. City Bakery is just off of Union Square on w18th. You can quickly duck in here and grab a quick bite to eat. The multi floor space has ample room to accommodate the large lunch crowds which means you can actually sit down and enjoy your salad.
The selection of salad at City Bakery is pretty varied and is quite good. There are a lot of fusion Asian tastes such as Shanghai Salad with Bok Choy, or Fragrant Thai Saffron Rice with Lotus seeds. They also have hot food selections such as baked fish, macaroni and cheese, and a large selections of hot soup. The mushrooms I got were seasoned with a sweet lemon zest which was both surprising and light. The baked crusty cod fish that I picked up was also flavored and marinated with a hint of honey and brown sugar. This is a good salad bar and the location and convenience is a welcome alternative considering the busy neighborhood.
Of course City Bakery got it’s name from it’s selection of baked goods including a delicious assortment of tarts:
We tried the passion fruit tart that had creamy lemon filling. The sweet pastry cream was a great complement with the fresh tart citrus passion fruit jelly. I got to go back and try out the other tarts with some coffee.
