Alkali Flies – Mono Lake, CA – Plate Of The Day

Alkali Flies – Mono Lake, CA

February 26, 2005

Didn’t really eat these flies, but apparently the natives used to eat the fly larvae to survive. The funniest thing was this plaque from the Mono Lake park. “surprisingly edible!”??? I wonder if these park rangers actually cooked some up. They say it tastes like buttery nutty rice – I guess the next time I eat buttery nutty rice I ‘ll remember the Alkali fly larvae. haha
