Saffron Thai Food Restaurant is located at the foot of Mission Hills next door to Vero Gelato Cafe. Mission Hills is a hot spot for great food in San Diego. Just at the corner of India and Washington is Saffron Thai, Vero Gelato Cafe, Sushi, El Indio Mexican, a nice middle eastern restaurant and of course the Shakespeare pub and grill (All on one block!)

Saffron Thai restaurant is owned and operated by legendary San Diego chef Su Mei Yu. She grew up in Bankok but has been running this restaurant for many many years. Saffron is a local favorite that always picks up awards every year for great Thai food.
Next door to to the Saffron Noodles and Sate Restaurant is the smaller Saffron Thai Grilled Chicken – it’s a small pick up window that serves excellent grilled rotisserie chicken. It’s a great choice for lunch because the service is quick and your meals are always served fresh out of the rotisserie oven.
It’s also a great choice if you are leaving on a flight. Saffron is only about a 10-15 minute drive from the airport.
Martin got the spicy drunken noodles with chicken. The noodles and the sauce are served stir fried with broccoli, red peppers, onions and a savory spicy sauce.
Today the Pad Thai Chicken was a little on the sweet side – it was good but as Martin observed it was a lot more like spaghetti than Thai food.
Overall Saffron Thai is a good choice for Thai food in the Downtown / Mission Hills area. The dishes at Saffron like many other Thai restaurants are on the smaller side, but I guess this is ok since it leaves room for the great gelato that you can get next door at Vero Cafe.
Happened to see this on the menu on the way out – looks interesting. I wonder what the after effects are for this soup?
