Tiramisu Cake Carrot Cake Twiggs Cafe Downtown San Diego

March 31, 2005

People tend to get a little restless at my office around 4PM. I think it started when Julio began his timely grilling hour of Costco turkey burgers on our George Foreman grill. 4PM became Julio Time or “JT” for short. But lately the savory cheese turkey burgers in the afternoon snack time slot have been replaced by a much sweeter contender – Tiramisu Cake. You may recall my raving reviews about Darband Persian Restaurant’s Tiramisu. Well it was just this afternoon that Jenny Babcock and Danielle Tarantino told me about Twiggs cafe up on Cortez Hill and their selection of desserts which includedsTiramisu.

So Martin, Danielle, Jenny, Sabrina and I made the trek up the hill to Twiggs cafe to check out the competition.

Unlike the individually wrapped pre-sliced pieces of Tiramisu at Darband, the tiramisu cake at Twiggs is sliced at the counter. (Martin was keen on noticing how the server stuck his tongue out as he gingerly sliced the pieces – actually kind of funny haha.)

We also tried out the Carrot cake as well:

So how does it compare to Darband?
Tiramisu comparison Darband and Twiggs Cafe San Diego Downtown
As you notice the Darband tiramisu has fluffier layers of marscarpone cream but the Twiggs tiramisu has a more firm cake (and the topping of chocolate slices is pretty nice). The taste however is completely different. The Darband is moist and has a stronger rum aftertaste which blends well with the cream frosting. The Twiggs is not as moist, doesn’t have the rum flavor but has a stronger chocolate aftertaste. I actually like the Darband version. However, as Danielle was quick to point out – it’s not a good comparison because the Twiggs Cafe tiramisu is not a true tiramisu but really a tiramisu ‘flavored’ cake. That explains why the Twiggs cafe version is less moist since it hasn’t been soaking in rum like the Darband version. So I guess that settles it – they’re both good!

The carrot cake was awesome. Very moist, nutty and not too sweet:

So 4PM at the office is now “TT” Tiramisu time.
