Along the north fork of Long Island are dozens of local vineyards and charming local restaurants. This winter, many of these vineyards are taking part in the Long Island Winter Festival with live Jazz performances at many vineyards and restaurants. We headed out to Jamesport Long Island to check a few of these out and although in the end (it’s a long story about rip-off cabs) we didn’t actually reach any of the vineyards, we were fortunate enough to try out one of the locally celebrated Country Kitchen of Jamesport NY.

On the business card and its website, you’ll find that Country Kitchen’s address is simply Main st. It has a real address, I think it’s something like 1667 Main St but once you arrive in Jamesport, there’s only one stoplight, about 6 storefronts on the street and Country Kitchen is the only restaurant on the block. But it’s not some hole in the wall restaurant in a small bumpkin town either. Country Kitchen uses locally grown organic vegetables, has a great selection of local wines and has received numerous awards for its cuisine. Let me just tell you that this was beyond our expectations – without a car and our hotel miles away, we were considering going to the roadside deli and stocking up on sandwich meat or (gasp) microwave Rice a Roni!

That night we tried 2 of the specials: Grilled Salmon encrusted with broiled sweet potatoes served with Israeli couscous and a huge bowl of mussels in a cream sauce with bowtie pasta, sun dried tomatoes and fresh cilantro. Both were amazing. While killing time to wait for our cab, we somehow made room for a chocolate hazelnut tart to finish off the meal. Next year, definitely going to check out some of these vineyards and definitely going to rent a car. There is so much to explore out in the north fork area! Enjoy!

I demand clarification that I WAS NOT the person considering microwave rice!
