Rothaus Tannenzäpfle Pils
Of the many beers I tried while I was in Germany, the Rothaus Tannenzäpfle Pils definitely stood out. One of Gisa’s friends Volker even jokingly said if he had a bottle of Rothaus Tannenzäpfle Pils on his deathbed he’d be a happy man. As a pilsner, it’s quite crisp and light but also a bit more on the sweet side than bitter.
Besides the great taste, there’s also quite a cult following for this beer among universities and clubs. For one thing, the label features a blonde named Birgit Kraft which is apparently a pun in German to mean Bier gibt Kraft or “beer gives strength”. A local beauty contest was recently held to find Miss Birgit Kraft (see photo below). The Rothaus website sells stickers, decals for your car and a whole line of clothing with the Birgit Kraft logo. The Tannen Zäpfle (pineapple) by the way is not an ingredient of the beer but instead a reference to the brewery’s black forrest location.
Cool Tip Of The Day: After you open the bottle just twist the foil top off. Any ripping or peeling of the foil will expose you as an amateur. I kind of found out the hard way LOL.
AND, if you want to be even MORE cool, memorize the regional song of the brewery: http://tannenzaepfle.de/pop_badnerlied.htm
