Besides having a few more arepas, perhaps the only thing you really wanted at Caracas in the East Village was a bit more elbow room for you and your friends. Well, now you can in their new shiny location out in Williamsburg Brooklyn. Caracas Brooklyn just opened about 2.5 weeks ago and the cult following has already arrived. Well I guess it helps that, as co-owner Maribel Araujo says, most of the people who go to Caracas New York already live in Brooklyn.

With an artsy wood shack design featuring overlapping layers of unfinished lumber on its walls, the new Caracas restaurant in Brooklyn offers spacious seating for over 75. In the spring Caracas is going to open their garden space which I’m quite sure will undoubtedly be THE place to be seen drinking their famous Camburadas and munching down a few arepas.

Caracas Venezuelan Arepas Williamsburg Brooklyn Arepas, originally from Colombia and Venezuela, are patties made of corn bread stuffed with a variety of meats and vegetables. At Caracas, the corn bread is thick and pan fried to a crisp, which when mixed with the sauces and stuffing lends to an incredible delight of textures. For me, the corn meal bread is what makes it distinguishable from your average emapanada.

I went last weekend with my friend Diana and we chowed down a sizeable assortment of arepas including the Reina Pepiada (chunky chicken and avocado mix salad $6.50), the La del Gato (guayanes cheese, fried sweet plantains and avocado slices $6.00), and my favorite the La Surena (grilled chicken and chorizo sausage with avocado slices with their famous slightly spicy chimi-churri sauce $7.50) We also tried out the De Pabellon empanada (shredded beef, black beans, white salty cheese and sweet plantains).

Caracas also features many Venezuelan entrée plates such as their Pabellon Criollo ($14 shredded beef, white rice, black beans, and fried sweet plantains sprinkled with salty cheese), but if you’re going to visit be sure to order at least one arepa to get the full experience. Enjoy!
