Rick’s Cafe Negril Jamaica – Cliff Diving Club Restaurant Sunset
WEST END ROAD
Rick’s Cafe been voted one of the top 10 destination bars in the world by Caribbean Travel and Life Magazine (whoever they are). But really I think it’s worth checking out. Rick’s Cafe is located south of the roundabout off of the cliffs – away from the main 7 mile white sand beach of Negril. It’s got a great view of the ocean and its a wonderful place to enjoy a few drinks during sunset. But if you are a baller, you come to Rick’s cafe to jump off the cliffs! There’s a 35 foot high spot diving platform above the sea floor – it’s plenty deep and all the rocks have been cleared away so it’s relatively safe. The first step off that diving platform is the hardest part. People come from all over Jamaica to visit Rick’s Cafe to jump off the cliff. A lot of locals come and jump off the higher parts in the cliffs adjacent to Rick’s Cafe. We arrived in the morning around noon and first had some lunch. I had a Rick’s Cafe Jerk burger and Sing had the Rick’s Cafe trio special which includes fish, steak and chicken. Both of the dishes were typically western dishes for all the tourists at this place. Neither was very spicy and after eating out at local joints throughout the week, the food was a little bland. I guess it suits those Jamaican tourists straight from the cruise ships. Anyhow after about 20 minutes of getting my nerve, I climbed up and did the jump off the famous Rick’s Cafe high cliff. All I have to say is that it was a long long way down. It seemed to take forever to hit the water. I actually kind of fucked up the jump and landed slighly on my back instead of feet first and it stings if you don’t make a perfect landing. Partially, I have to admit I’m out of shape. For those less daring inclined, Rick’s Cafe offers a lot of other entertaining options – there’s a pool were you can dip in and admire the sunset, there’s a sandy spot where you can dance before live bands that play every night. Rick’s cafe is definitely one of those top destination party spots in Jamaica – I can only imagine how crazy it gets in the high season during spring break. Rick’s cafe – definitely worth checking out. (Free admission anyhow).
