Nathans Hot Dog – 4th of July Hot Dog Eating Contest

Hot Dog Eating Contest Coney Island Amusement Park
Brooklyn New York
July Fourth 2006

Every year I try to make it down to Coney island to check out the 4th of July hot dog eating contest at Nathan’s. It’s pretty amazing to see the four-time world champion Takeru Kobayashi of Japan gorge down 50 hot dogs in 12 minutes against his competitors who are about 2 or 3 times his size. Kobayashi is only 144 lbs. The Nathan’s hot dogs are pretty good too – I wouldn’t say they are the gourmet hot dogs you’d get at say Top Dog in Berkeley or Mandler’s Hot dogs in Union Square but they are definitely a step up from Grey’s Papaya. Anyhow how can you possibly eat over 50 hot dogs with buns let alone in 12 minutes? I heard that Kobayashi ( a national celebrity in Japan ), excercises his stomach weeks prior to the hot dog eating contest by stretching his stomach by stuffing himself. It’s goign to be interesting this year cause there’s a new up and coming star – Sonya Thomas (Korean born). She’s only 100 lbs and is said to be a likely contender to Kobayashi for the hot dog eating event.

I’ll be sure to take some more photos from the hot dog eating event on the 4th and put them up on my Flickr site.

  1. Ordinarily, I would be with you — hot dogs for the 4th. But check out this idea for a patriotic 4th at Cooking with Ideas — support the fast for peace.

  2. I did not see Crazy Legs this year in the coverage on tv. Of course I know he was there as his girlfriend, my daughter,Nicole, is the bun fairy at the competition. Personally, myself I had a dozen brats, two plates of cheese covered nachos and I’m now cruising into a few sides of ribs back here in Tampa, Florida. No time limit. I’ll wash it down with a twelve pack of those cute little Heineken kegs. I love those little guys. Pretty exciting contest this year!
