4 Foods To Avoid Before Bed If You Want A Good Night’s Sleep

So much of a person’s health and wellness relies on the food they eat. Different foods react differently with the body; creating energy, bringing in vitamins and nutrients, building muscle and more. And while almost all food can be good enough for you in moderation, there are some foods that you should really only eat at certain times during the day, as they can react with your body in a way that can make sleep hard to come by. So to help ensure that you’re able to get the rest your body so desperately needs at night, here are four foods you should avoid before bed if you’re wanting to get a good night’s sleep.

Broccoli and Cauliflower

While we all know that vegetables are good for us and that most people need to get more vegetables in their diet each day, there are some vegetables that you’re doing to want to steer clear from in the late evening. According to Audrey Bruno and Shana Lynch, contributors to Delish.com, cruciferous vegetables like broccoli and cauliflower contain a lot of insoluble fiber, which can take a long time for your body to digest. And when your body is still trying to digest food, it can be hard for you to get comfortable enough to fall asleep or stay asleep until your digestion in finished.

Anything With A Punch Of Spice

One thing that’s sure to wake people up at night or keep them from falling asleep altogether is heartburn or acid reflux. To avoid this issue yourself, Kerri-Ann Jennings, a contributor to Food Network, advises that you keep away from any foods that are a decent amount of spice in them, as they can irritate your stomach and cause a lot of acid in your body.

Copious Amounts Of Water

Although water is vital for your body to function properly, you should have a cut-off time during the day when you stop guzzling down as much of the liquid as you can. While water won’t hurt your body or make it hard for you to sleep, Marissa Laliberte, a contributor to Reader’s Digest, shares that needing to get up throughout the night to use the restroom because you’ve had too much water can be a real interruption to your sleep cycles.

Chocolate

Almost everyone knows that drinking coffee will keep you awake. But what many people don’t realize is that eating chocolate, especially dark chocolate, can keep you up for the exact same reason. According to Amanda Gardner, a contributor to Health.com, a bar of chocolate can have as much caffeine in it as three cups of coffee, skip the chocolate desserts before bed from now on.

If you haven’t been sleeping well, consider if you’ve been eating any of the foods mentioned above before bed and try to stop this habit in the future.
