El Sabroso Hidden Spanish Restaurant Counter Garment District Midtown NY
265 W 37th St

If you look hard enough, you’ll find some hidden culinary gems throughout the city in the most unusual places. Awhile back I wrote about the hidden Ecuadorian Restaurant El Rincon Del Sabor in the heart of the Diamond District on W47th. Then there’s one of my favorites, Mexico 200 in the back of a Mexican grocery deli in Williamsburg Brooklyn. I recently checked out El Sabroso in the heart of the garment district. El Sabroso is pretty easy to miss, despite the large blue banner on the outside – the difficult part of finding the restaurant is that it’s located at the back of a dark freight elevator entrance. Relax, it’s legit, has great food, and it’s cheap. They have a lot of rice and meat specials. I got the roasted pork (pernil) with rice and beans for just $6. I was tempted to pull up a stool next to some garment workers and enjoy the breeze off of the oscillating fan but had to jet back to work. Will need to come back and knock back a few negra modellos (I think they serve beer) on the food counter next time.
