Just like you can’t judge a book by its cover, you sometimes probably can’t judge a restaurant by its decor. La Nonna has the over-the-top Italian decorations replete with sponge painted fresco-like walls, cheesy paintings and bad wrought iron light fixtures. Its “Las Vegas” cheesy bad if that helps your imagination. And to be on Bedford Avenue in the middle of Williamsburg it doesn’t make sense. However if you can get beyond the decorations and grab a slice you’ll soon find a very affordable and fun Italian restaurant in Williamsburg. It’s completely no frills, the service is excellent and to top it off you’re welcome to bring your own bottle of wine for your dinner! There’s la nonna pizzeria williamsburg brooklyn ny UVA wines a few blocks away but I prefer to go up to South 1st to the Bottle shop (just ask for Caesar and he’ll hook you up). The pizza is amazing and much better than the 24 hour rip off place up on 7th near the L train subway where basically everyone goes after a hard night of drinking. La Nonna is actually open till 2AM so I’m surprised that it hasn’t caught on. Then again, come to think of it when you’re drunk I guess the quality of Pizza isn’t super important. Anyhow, check it out, as they also have a great pasta dishes, the salads are enormous and the staff is extremely friendly. For the pizza, I especially like the one with Arugula and Mozzarella.
