It’s kind of hard to describe – kind of like licorice in the tingling you get but not sweet. In the case of Ma Po Do Fu, Ma Po Do Fu sauce is spicy and salty sauce and has that tingling ma flavoring. You can buy Star Anise spice or 5 spice to get an example pure Ma flavor.
