I first noticed Ottoman’s Cafe on my way to the W4th train station. It’s clean white minimalist space is a stark contrast from the greasy 2 bros pizza and the bright flashing lights of the head shops on the other side of the IFC Cinema. After I entered I kind of regretted it at first because here’s a falafel or döner kebab sandwich for $6-$7 when you could easily go outside and find a halal cart and get one for just $4. But I gave it a shot and I have to say I’m extremely impressed.
Ottoman’s Café is the real deal and their döner kebabs are far different from any of the halal carts. First of all, after they slice the meat off of the rotisserie, they lightly heat it over a grill along with the pita bread giving the meat and the bread a crispy smoky flavor. Then they use fresh leafy lettuce onions and tomatoes and finally the white sauce isn’t some bland unrecognizable sauce, but a sauce where you can actually taste the yogurt with a hint of dill.
In my opinion Ottoman’s Cafe makes one of the best Döner Kebab sandwiches in town. Reminds me of the ones I got out in Cologne a few years ago. Ottoman’s Cafe has outdoor seating which is great for the summer times, not to mention its proximity makes it an ideal place to get great food to sneak into the IFC as well. Go check it out!
