Walsrode Germany Krug Dreikronen Restaurant – Curry Wurst, Grünkohl , Ratzeputz Bitters
Spent the weekend up in Walsrode Germany which is a small farm town less than one hour from Hannover and had an amazing meal at the local Krug Dreikronen Restaurant. Dreikronen is kind of the hunting lodge / bar / gathering center for the small town. On the walls, hang the latest hunting trophies which range from deer to wild boar and there’s plenty of interesting tales for each one of them. On the menu is a fine selection of true hearty German dishes. Of course the starter for the meal is a round of frosty pils fresh from the tap. One of their famous dishes is the Curry Wurst which was enormous here. I also tried the Grünkohl (German Kale) which is grown locally here. It’s mostly available in the winter time because it is harvested when ice crystals form on the vegetable. It’s boiled and whipped with butter/cream and is delicious with the meats.
Finally we ended with shots of Ratzeputz, a spicy local degestif that tastes a bit like Jägermeister but with a spicy ginger finish. I love going to local places like this – you get such a great perspective on the food while enjoying the good natured hospitality of the locals. Go Walsrode!
