On my quest to experience more local restaurants in Miami, I checked out the Captain’s Tavern. I got the tip from someone I met at the conference I was attending. Apparently The Captain’s Tavern is a local favorite that’s been around over 35 years – maybe even a well kept secret I would say based on the difficulty of finding it. (It’s hidden in a parking lot of an office park. Basically from Miami, go down route 1 and when you see the KFC on your right, take an immediate left on SW 95.)
They don’t take reservations at the Captain’s Tavern and on the day I went it was 2 for 1 lobster night so it was amazingly packed. I had a drink at the bar as I waited for a spot. Inside, the restaurant is a dimly lit space filled with seatime bric a brac -plastic displays of blue fin tuna, rusty lanterns, aquariums, and more. The menu is pretty extensive and covers pretty much all types of seafood (mostly fried) – shrimp, crab, lobster, fish, oysters. The 2 for 1 lobster sounds great but way too much food for me so I opted for a combo of seafood : paella. But this too proved to be a pretty large dish for as well. The portions here are so large – definitely don’t come alone to the restaurant! The Captain’s Tavern is a fun family restaurant and I would definitely recommend checking it out. Ay Matey!
