Went on a short road trip to upstate New York a few weekends ago and we stopped by the CIA college at Hyde Park. I’m an avid Anthony Bourdain fan and this is the college that he attended back in the day. If you don’t know who Anthony Bourdain is, read Kitchen Confidential – it’s a really hillarious look at the food and restaurant industry. For those of you who have read the book, let me just tell you that it is a little difficult picturing Bourdain at this school – it’s kind of straight laced with all the students were running around in chef uniforms, bow ties, and black tie gala attire. Very formal East Cost prep school environment. I’m sure the students let loose with some pretty wild dorm parties I’m sure.
Eating at the Culinary Institute of America / CIA
Unfortunately we were not able to get last minute reservations to eat at the CIA that weekend. I’ve heard that Escoffier’s is pretty good not to mention a great value for the service and food. You can register for reservations online but I have to warn you it’s kind of a pain because you first have to register for a username and password and supply them with your email address (sorry, I’ve done a lot of web usability work in the past). So if you’re looking to reserve a seat at the 3-4 restaurants on the campus, I’d recommend calling the info line instead.
Reservations aside, traveling upstate NY was a really fun experience especially at this time of the year as the leaves are rapidly changing color. It’s also nice to get out of NY and get some sanity and breathe some fresh air. Going to post a few places we stopped at on our road trip.
