I was at a client meeting last month and our local account executive treated us to lunch at the famous Mary Mac’s Tea Room for some famous southern classic food. The tea room itself has been around since 1945. It was created as a way for widows of world war II to gather and meet but it was also established as a great place to enjoy fine classic southern cuisine.

Mary Mac’s is decorated with era like wallpaper and the lobby is proudly displays photos of famous politicians, musicians, throughout its long history. Jimmy Carter is known as a regular at Mary Macs.

As we walked into the the victorian style salon lobby, it kind of struck me as a little odd seeing all the businessmen dressed in suits in a Victorian salon – as if we were all standing outside drinking tea and eating cookies after Church. But then we were quickly escorted and seated at our table in an adjoining room. A piping hot basket of cornbread was immediately placed at our table and they were delicious especially slathered with butter and honey. I ordered Roast Pork wtih Dressing & Gravy ( $8.75 ) and with each Teamroom Favorite you get a selection of 2 sides and a glass of Southern Sweet Tea. Mary Macs Teamroom Favorites include other Southern classics such as Country Fried Steak, Fried Chicken, Chicken and Dumplings, Meatloaf with tomato sauce, and Chicken Pot Pie. The sides at Mary Mac inlcude many other Southern delights such as Fried Okra, Hoppin Jons (beans and rice), Creamed corn, Turnip Greens, Mac and Cheese, Butter Peas, Squash Souffle and Collard Greeens & Cracklin. Overall it’s an interesting experience – one that can’t be missed if you’re looking for a classic Southern food experience the next time you’re in Atlanta. Check out Mary Macs!
