Take F/G to Smith Street

We took a stroll around DUMBO yesterday – it was hot and very humid. Hello NY Summer. Yesterday was also another one of those crazy train days where you play musical chairs with all letter trains. The C train was running on the F line so we somehow ended up at the Hoyt Street-Schermerhorn Street stop. We got off and from there we walked down Atlanticeggs norvegienne and browsed the old antique shops and new boutiques that line the boulevard. We then hung a left on Smith Street off of Atlantic. Smith street here is not unlike Williamsburg (but I would say the Smith St is several notches down on the attitude compared to Williamsburg.) – similar demographic of people, lots of funky boutiques, bars, restaurants. One of those we stumbled by in the heat was Bar Tabac a few blocks down from Atlantic. At the time they had a quirky swing jazz band on the sidewalk with a banjo, keyboards, drums, and horns. Kind of reminds me of The Squirrel Nut Zippers. Decided to cool down with a carafe of sangria but our fellow neighbors next to us were chowing down some eggs benedict. Mind you it’s 90F outside and it’s 4:30 PM – brunch? I don’t know why but it french toast seemed like a great idea and we were both very happy that we went for it. Bar Tabac is a French Bar/Bistro/Brasserie that serves your regular French faire – but brunch was the hit that afternoon. Sing got a plate of French Toast and I got the Eggs Norvegienne (like eggs benedict but with smoked salmon vs. canadian bacon). They were both excellent and hit the spot. The sangria wasn’t too bad either and the best part was that everyone here is so mellow – not pushing you to order your meal, finish and pay like in Manhattan. It’s nice to be in Brooklyn I have to admit. Would love to check out more pubs, restaurants on the strip. We’re considering moving to DUMBO someday so Smith St would be another option too.
