Yes that’s Ikea in the background but no, Ikea isn’t expanding is business into fresh vegetables and fruit (although that would be cool). Located just a few blocks away from Ikea Brooklyn, the Red Hook Community Farm sells organic vegetables, fruit and meat (locally sourced). The Red Hook Community Farm is a nonprofit organization that promotes the sustainable development of Red Hook by turning vacant lots into vibrant farms and provides educational opportunities for youth 14-19 in the local neighborhood. They also have a smaller farm on Governor’s Island.

Interested in helping out? The Red Hook Community Farm also has a CSA program where you volunteer for a certain number of hours per season and in return you get access to a share of the crops.

As a resident of Brooklyn, I’m really happy to see more and more neighborhoods transform urban abandoned school fields and rooftops into vibrant farm fields. The Red Hook Community Farm is just one of many in Brooklyn.
