A little more exploring the new neighborhood brought us over to Hicks street, a block down from Henry off of Cranberry and into Jack the Horse Tavern. It’s a rustic, authentically Brooklyn Heights neighborhood spot. Exposed brick walls encompass wide open windows that look out onto the tree lined street. A full bar with a nice selection of local beers on tap immediately welcomes you at the entrance while two main dining rooms with plenty of large tables fills the main dining area. It’s typical Brooklyn Heights – upscale richly prepared food but unpretentious with reasonable prices.

We started with the smoked brook trout salad served with warm fingerling potatoes and toasted almonds with a Creme Fraiche & Horseradish Vinaigrette. If you go, be sure to order this – it’s amazing. The warm smoked trout with the crunch of the toasted almonds make for a rich combination that’s great all year long.

We paired this with a bottle of Gruner Veltliner, Glatzer 2006, Austria ($31) which went well with the acidity and sweetness of the white wine.

For entrée I had the Braised Shortribs with Roasted Brussels Sprouts, Radishes & Potato Puree ($31). You can’t really ever screw up braised shortribs and when it is served over a cushion of potato puree drizzled in thick rich gravy, it’s exceptional. Get this dish as well!

Finally for dessert we tried both the rhubarb sorbet and plate of the banana creme tart – both hitting the spot and helping end an incredible meal. I hear that on 5:30-7pm Tues and Weds there’s a three course fix prixe special that includes appetizer, entrée, dessert, coffee or tea.

I love the new neighborhood and finding gems like this will keep us eating out for some time for sure! Welcome to Brooklyn Heights / Dumbo!
