Among the brightly lit shops and restaurants on Montague St in Brooklyn Heights is a very personable Mediterannean and Turkish restaurant called Taze. Just to get into the restaurant feels like you are going over to a friend’s house as you enter into an unmarked apartment building entrance and walk up a flight of stairs (watch out for the mail that is perched over the mailboxes next to the staircase!). Once inside, you have a choice of sitting at one of the tables that overlook Montague (great people watching viewpoints) or taking a tour through the kitchen to get toTaze’s hidden outdoor patio. It was a nice night with only a slight breeze, so we chose the outdoor patio and sat down next to a table of girls enjoying a bottle of wine and a large hookah.
We started with the red lentil soup which was nicely spiced and served with a dish of warm toasted pita bread. Next was a plate of mucver (fried zucchini pancakes) covered with dill and a light yogurt sauce. Finally we attempted (but failed) to finish the grilled special for two. It’s an enormous plate of delicious meats including beef kebabs, chicken, and lamb over rice and salad. If you are going to order this, bring some help – you could easily split it among four to be honest. We’re definitely coming back because we heard the fish specials are great and we didn’t even make it for dessert. I’m also pretty sure the Taze’s outdoor patio will become a makeshift beergarden this summer. Enjoy!
