If you recall a few weeks ago I went out for some horrible Indian Food on 1st Ave. After feeling a little sick that night we decided to head out for a drink. On East 9th and St Mark’s between 2nd and 3rd avenue is a small cluster of Japanese restaurants and bars sometimes referred to as Little Tokyo. As you’re walking along the south side of East 9th across the street from Soba Ya you’ll spy a tiny little sign off of the sidewalk for the Decibel Sake Bar and restaurant. Decibel is a hidden subterranean speakeasy bar that’s really easy to miss. You basically descend the stairs below street level and enter into a dark, wooden interior with red paper lanterns, and shelves of Japanese collectibles. Despite the kitschy interiors, Decibel is serious on Sake. That is once you get past the TSA-like tenacious host who guards the entrance with a flimsy piece of rope. We had to sit at the entrance for 15 minutes until the 4th member of our complete party arrived before he would allow us to enter into the back room. I tried a few old standby lies like my friend was outside smoking or on his cell phone or parking his car or having an argument with a friend and would be down right away, but it was all moot as the host remained resolute. Finally after entering, we ordered some premium sake that is served in an over flowing glass cup that sits in a square saucer.

I ordered a Saketini which is Vodka, Sake prepared like a martini. Decibel Sake Bar East Village New York
Decibel Sake Bar and Restaurant also serves some great Japanese food to go with your drinks. In the summer time there is often a DJ that spins some nice breaks in the back room. It gets pretty loud and crowded and is a great place to get away from the hot sun outdoors. For the moment, I was just happy that the Sake helped ease my stomach from the Indian food.
